Understanding lives in your head, while your reactions are shaped by the state of your body. Somatic therapy works not only through conversation, but directly with the body: muscle tension, breathing, and habitual bodily responses.
There is a direct, two-way connection between the body and the mind. Mental and emotional states trigger responses in the body as it adapts to the situation: some muscles brace, others relax, breathing, nervous-system activity, and hormone levels all change.
Often, these bodily reactions form lasting patterns that stick around long after the circumstances are gone. Then the body starts influencing the mind in turn: it signals that it’s ready for a certain reaction, and that’s exactly the reaction that shows up.
As a result, the body makes your usual response to familiar situations the path of least resistance, and responding any other way is hard, especially when the situation is new.
You find it hard to set a goal, start working toward it, or see it through to the end
You’re not happy with your productivity, focus, or drive
You don’t like how you react or the impression you make on other people
You’ve worked through your past and you’re ready to move on, but something keeps making you react the old way
You struggle with intimacy or sex
You’ve been to therapy, but it felt unfinished, or the results didn’t stick
There’s nothing wrong with you, but you feel capable of more: a brighter, freer, more energetic life
The method works directly with the body, so change happens where awareness and understanding are not enough.
The holding patterns that kept your body braced for years gradually loosen their grip, and you gain the ability to truly relax, not just “numb out” for an evening.
You stop falling into habitual emotional reactions, old triggers stop controlling you, and you gain the ability to choose how to respond.
The body stops sending signals of anxiety, danger, stress, and helplessness long after the causes are gone. The body turns from a source of tension into a source of support.
You begin to notice your own reactions as they are just starting to form, when they can still be guided, instead of realizing what's happening only after a reaction has taken over and you’re left dealing with the fallout.
It usually takes 2–3 sessions to find out whether this method is right for you: a diagnostic session and one or two therapy sessions.
